ACHIEVEMENTS IN BRIEF 1. MERITORIOUS PERFORMANCE SHIELD Grid station equipments including132 kv circuit breakers, isolators CTs, PTs control, relay switch gear panels were standardized to provide flexibility for quick replacement without construction of new foundations and replacement of supporting structure. This is was achieved with many years of hectic efforts. As a result of this innovation, the replacement of equipment which used to take days and months is now a matter of few 11ours. it has not only resulting in huge financial savings to WAPDA running into million of rupees every year but also in time savings and minimizing power interruption. The Authority in recognition of my innovation and creation work awarded Meritorious Performance Shield 'in 1994. |

2. INTERCONNECTION FACILITIES FOR IPPs GOP approved the PC‑l amounting to Rs. 2000 million for interconnection facilities in March 1996 with a delay of more than a year while most of the IPPs were scheduled to be commissioned from July 1997 onward. There was a time constraint for arranging F.C.C. of more than Rs. One billion to procure materials and commission the project within the short span of 15 months, M.D. (T & G) Mr. Akbar Khan handed over the total project from initiation till its commissioning under “one window operation” to me. It was a challenging job which was accepted mi addition to my own duties. World Bank offered to finance the F.C.C component, but its implementation was not practically possible due to time constraints. How the objectives to commission the project worth of Rs. 2 billion were achieved without help of foreign donors is beyond scope of this document. The World Bank and the GOP were also worried, as non-commissioning of FPPs in time would have resulted in heavy penalties to WAPDA amounting to millions of dollars per month. GOP also formed a special Committee under Member ‑ I of Planning Commission to monitor the project. Most of the interconnection facilities to IPP's have been completed well before time without any hurdles or repercussion on the Authority and the Ministry. At different occasions the Committee highly appreciated WAPDA achievements and the work. |

3. INDEPENDENT POWER HOUSES (IPPs) The paper on “Impact of private power generation on WAPDA economy” was prepared by the undersigned and presented in the seminar conducted by the Institute of Engineers March 1997. 1 am proud to say that this was the first paper to be published in which financial impact was worked out 'in real terms and today has proved to be true. In this paper remedial measures to reduce the 'impact on the consumers and tariff adjustment were also suggested which seems to be followed by GOP. 4. NEW TECHNOLOGIES I had always taken a step forward to introduce new technologies in WAPDA. Gas Insulated Substations were introduced in WAPDA with my personal efforts for first time in 1986. They ate most suitable for space constraint and polluted areas. GIS were constructed at Bhatti Gate, Mochi Gate and Ravi Bund Road areas. Recently 220kV GIS Gridstation at Islamabad University has been proposed under OECF financing replacing conventional ‑i4ndstation which would result in huge saving to WAPDA. In addition 11kV vaccum circuit breakers, SF‑6 13 2 kV circuit breakers, XLP cables up to 132 KV, pad mounted transformers heat shrinkable terminations were inducted in the system replacing old technologies. 5 SPECIFICATIONS, STANDARDS AND TECHNICAL‑INSTRUCTIONS I served Planning, Engineering, Design and Standards Departments of WAPDA in various capacities for over two decades. During this period a large number of equipment specifications, operation and construction standards relating to transmission lines, Gridstations and Distribution were prepared by me while working at lower ranks. At senior levels, I was responsible for providing guidance to my staff, monitoring, checking and according approvals to their work. 6. TECHNICAL PAPERS Inn addition to the above I had written numerous technical papers on the subjects of restructuring and privatization of WAPDA, standardization, new technologies which were published 'in the journals of IEP & IEEP from time to time.
